In the beginning…

Shaw Development traces its roots to our sister engineering company, Shaw Aero Devices.

Both companies have come a long way since Frank Shaw founded Shaw Metal Products in 1944. Shaw Metal Products was originally a general machine shop serving the aircraft industry in Garden City, NY. After witnessing an improperly installed fuel cap dislodge from an airplane fuel tank during flight, Frank Shaw conceived, with the assistance of Orrin Ross, a lift-and-turn cap that could only be installed correctly. This cap revolutionized the aircraft fuel cap industry and was the first of 250 new designs introduced by Shaw Aero Devices. In 1968, Shaw Aero Devices introduced and patented the first lightning safe fuel cap that made air travel safer for passenger and cargo flights.

In order to keep up with the company’s growth, Frank Shaw moved to a new facility in East Hampton, on the eastern end of Long Island. The company grew in East Hampton for 29 years until Jim Shaw, Frank’s son, moved Shaw Aero Devices to Ft. Myers, Florida in 1993.

 

Creation of Development…

In 1959, Frank Shaw established Shaw Development in Garden City, New York. He moved the company to East Hampton in 1963 and then to Naples, Florida in 1980. This facility manufactured parachute hardware and served as a machine shop that supplied parts to Shaw Aero Devices. However, as business continued to grow, Development saw the opportunity and need for the lift-and-turn technology of an aviation product for the ground vehicle market. Shaw Development capitalized on the Devices technology and now produces caps, adapters, and fluid systems for military, commercial, and industrial ground vehicles worldwide. Shaw Development products now can be found in diverse in markets ranging from military vehicles, on road trucks, construction and agricultural vehicles and even high end motorcycles, automobiles and space vehicles.

In 1987, Shaw Development began producing expandable rubber plugs and currently offers over 250 standard sizes and several hundred custom designs to seal virtually any opening in a variety of industries. Our ability to offer cost effective custom designs along with the variety of standard sizes and style has made us an industry leader. This product line, along with the expansion of the caps and adapters led to the need for further expansion. In late 2000, Shaw Development co-located with Shaw Aero Devices into a common facility consisting of a 140,000 square foot factory and office space and 40,000 square foot research, development and test building.

While both companies operate independently, they share a common goal of providing industry leading engineering solutions to their respective markets, aerospace and ground vehicles. Whether it’s introducing lightning safe fuel caps to make aircraft safer or applying aircraft technology to reduce fuel spills on ground vehicles; the Shaw Companies welcome a challenge and create a new design while meeting customers cost targets.
