Shaw specializes in providing custom solutions to typical common products or problems. Our design expertise in fluids and composite structures helps us create cost effective products specifically designed for our customers application.
Our dedicated engineering staff typically creates over 250 new products every year. From small expandable plugs designed on a Boeing Delta Rocket, to complex lubrication systems used on turbine engine military vehicles; Shaw engineers can help you solve, improve, and reduce costs on your product.
We welcome challenges from all industries and have in depth product knowledge in the following;
Shaw Engineers work with our customers to create the necessary and proper system level performance criteria to enable a smooth transition to the design phase.
Shaw doesn’t just create a concept, we follow through to qualify the design and create an actual product. Concept and drawings are shared with the customer through various design and technical liaison meetings. ProEngineer 3D models are frequently shared with our customers so they can import the files and speed the design process. Design reviews, both internal and external, are held with all our functional groups (engineering, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, and tooling). Typically, for most of our customers, the PPAP process starts here with documentation of the entire process for review and internal learning.
The creation process continues with a detailed analysis of our new product design. Three dimensional models created in the design stage can now be subjected to the verification process. Additional design reviews such as Design Failure, Modes and Effects Analysis, logistic and repair analysis and software stress analysis are used to ensure the design meets the customers requirements. Shaw uses ProMechanica Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to ensure the product will meet the customers shock, vibration, and force loads. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, by Blue Ridge, is used to ensure the flow rates of liquid and gaseous fluids meet performance criteria set out in the original design. By using software modeling and analysis, prototype and test time is reduced and products get to launch quicker. Furthermore, product designs are improved, made more efficient, and less costly using these tools prior to committing to a prototype or tooled part. Upon completion and acceptance of the design analysis our customers frequently test our prototypes in real world conditions.
The Shaw Prototype Department is a full time dedicated shop which uses 3D models and drawings to create the actual physical product. The Prototype Department is integrated into the Engineering Group because 3D models drive the actual manufacturing process. Dedicated manufacturing engineers program models directly into the machines to create parts while other tooling experts create prototype or production tools used in other processes. While Shaw has the capability to produce injection molds, stamping dies, and rubber molds, the actual prototype schedule dictates the in or out of house manufacture of the part. Shaw engineers works closely with our customers to ensure the prototype will meet the requirements of the application and pass the qualification testing that the part is subjected to.
Shaw Development products are supplied to meet or exceed our customer expectations. Shaw product designs typically involve many processes. While we do not ever expect to fully integrate every process used in production of a product, we always control the process and end result. Components and parts are sourced around the world according to economic, work load, and complexity of the part.
The Manufacturing Department at Shaw Development has specializes in working with steel, elastomers, and composites. Our capabilities include;
For a complete list of factory equipment and capabilities, contact Shaw Marketing for a detailed description of our factory or plant tour of our 140,000 sf manufacturing facility and our 15,000 sf test building.
Shaw engineers qualify all our products to customer and regulatory requirements. The specification and our contract with the customer defines how the part will be tested and the pass criteria in any specific function. Development and qualification testing includes;
Actual testing and final test reports are coordinated with our customer to ensure that we either meet or exceed the contractual requirements. Typically, qualification testing is performed on both prototype and production hardware to ensure both type hardware meets the requirements.
The Shaw Development Engineering Group has been contracted to perform independent tests for a variety of worldwide commercial, military and government agencies. The advantage of contracting Shaw to perform your tests are not in the tools we possess but the capabilities and diverse engineering experience we have gained from product design and testing in various industries. Shaw Development Applications Engineers are available to discuss contract services for your testing or qualification requirements.
Shaw Development products are tailored to our customers specification or application. We produce any quantity of a product for a customer which can range from a single unit to several hundred thousand per year. Frequently they contain various materials and require new tools to produce. Therefore, our quotation process includes time to quote both in house and outside component production with in house assembly. We strive to meet customer price targets and rarely produce a prototype without a mutual agreement on a not to exceed price. This prevents us from disappointing the customer.
While we do quote and accept build to print work, most of our products are designed in house. While a lot of our products look similar, the volumes for our products can drive drastic changes to our manufacturing techniques and pricing. We appreciate your patience in providing the best quotation possible for a custom product designed to meet your needs.
We strive to meet our customers cost reduction methods and frequently share ideas and initiatives to lower costs during the life of a program.
