U.S. Heavy Truck Sector Is Rolling AgainThe U.S. heavy truck sector is back in the fast lane again. After a long slump during the Great Recession, sales of heavy trucks have picked up significantly and look poised for sustained growth over the next decade, according to the American Trucking Associations’ research.

The ATA, a federation of 50 affiliated state trucking associations and industry-related conferences and councils, recently released the latest edition of its “U.S. Freight Forecast to 2024.” The report announced “an overall increase in freight volumes for all modes of more than 20% and an increase in the amount of that freight moved by trucks.”

NAVUG Magazine: Shaw Dev Does Well by Doing Good

The spring 2014 issue of NAVUG Magazine is out, and it features a nice article about Shaw Development. Seems they have a pretty favorable impression of us, so be sure to check it out.

For those who don’t know, NAVUG is the official user group for professionals implementing Microsoft Dynamics NAV, an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system that helps businesses “manage their financials, supply chain, and people to create experiences that delight their customers.” In the software user group’s official publication, published quarterly, the editors run a series called Member in Action that focuses on a NAVUG member making a difference in its field. On page 20 of the current issue, you’ll find an article called “Values Thrive as Company Grows” – which is all about us.

The Future of Farming Is Here

Agriculture PhotoFood is one of the basic building blocks of a society. Throughout history, we can see that stability comes, in part, from having a well-fed populous, and it is no different today. In the past fifty years, the world’s population has more than doubled from 3.2 billion in 1964 to an estimated 7.1 billion in 2014. Producing enough food to attempt to feed this boom has been a challenge, but the modern agricultural sector has been up to the challenge. Crop production has tripled since 1964 and according to the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organization, our per capita food supply jumped 600 kcal/day during that same time.

The question then becomes, how does the agricultural sector keep up production to match and even exceed the doubling of the world’s population? Much like every other industry, the modern revolution in science and technology has made it possible, especially when it comes to farming equipment and techniques.

There are a lot of buzz words to keep track of these days. In the manufacturing world, it seems, no term is bandied about more nowadays than lean manufacturing. It’s become jargon for engineers. But what does it really mean in plain English?

A visit to the Lean Enterprise Institute website spells out the basics of the “lean” philosophy: “The core idea is to maximize customer value while minimizing waste. Simply, lean means creating more value for customers with fewer resources.”

Shaw Development LLC® is the descendant of a machine shop Frank Shaw founded in 1944 to serve the booming aircraft industry, Shaw Metal Products. That company evolved into Shaw Aero Devices after World War II, when Mr. Shaw developed a series of revolutionary aircraft fuel caps that set new industry standards in aviation safety. Over the years, Mr. Shaw expanded the business into other aviation-safety areas and automotive industry applications. Even now, Shaw Development produces caps, adapters, fast fill refueling systems and fluid management systems for military, commercial and industrial heavy-duty ground vehicles worldwide.
